Energy Literacy: The Essential System You Were Never Taught in School

Most of us were raised with a specific map of the human body. In biology class, we learned about the nervous system, the circulatory system, and the digestive system. We memorized the way bones connect and how muscles contract. We were taught to see the body as a collection of parts, much like a complex machine that occasionally needs a tune-up or a new part.

But there is a foundational layer of human biology that rarely makes it into the textbooks. It is the primary communicator system of the body. This system is the energetic network that coordinates everything else. It is the current that runs through the wires. Without it, the nervous system has no signal to send, and the heart has no rhythm to follow.

When you feel like you are doing everything right: eating well, sleeping enough, managing your schedule: yet you still feel depleted or out of sync, it is often because this essential system is struggling. Understanding this layer of your health is what I call energy literacy. It is the ability to read the subtle signals of your body before they turn into loud, painful symptoms.

Beyond the Hardware

In my background as a Registered Nurse, I spent years focusing on the hardware of the body. I learned how to monitor blood pressure, interpret lab results, and manage physical crises. It was grounded, evidence-based, and necessary. But over time, I noticed a gap. I saw people whose lab work looked perfect on paper, yet they felt heavy, anxious, or fundamentally unwell.

What was missing was an understanding of the body's energetic coherence.

While Western medicine focuses on the physical structures, ancient traditions have mapped the body’s energy pathways, or meridians, for thousands of years. Today, modern biophysics is beginning to bridge that gap. We now know that our cells communicate not just through chemical signals and hormones, but through light, frequency, and electromagnetic fields.

This is the primary communicator system. It is a high-speed information network that tells your body how to respond to the world around it. When this system is clear and coherent, your body knows how to heal itself. When it is stagnant or fragmented, you move into a state of chronic stress.

The Difference Between Stress and Restoration

To understand why energy literacy matters, we have to look at the contrast between a stressed state and a restored state.

Most people live in a state of survival. In this mode, the body is constantly scanning for threats. Your primary communicator system is sending out a signal of urgency. This triggers the sympathetic nervous system, better known as fight or flight. Over time, this constant signal of "danger" wears down your tissues, depletes your adrenals, and clouds your thinking. You can read more about this in my post on being stuck in fight or flight.

Restoration is the opposite. It is a state of coherence where the body’s internal environment is regulated and calm. In this state, the essential system is clear, allowing the parasympathetic nervous system to take the lead. This is where repair happens. This is where your immune system does its best work and where your energy reserves are replenished.

The goal of energy healing isn't just to "relax" you. It is to move your primary communicator system from a state of static and noise into a state of resonance. When your body is coherent, it has the intelligence it needs to return to balance on its own.

Learning the Language of Your Body

Energy literacy is the practice of noticing the shift from restoration to stress before it becomes a crisis. Your body is constantly speaking to you, but usually, it starts with a whisper.

A whisper might look like a slight tightness in your chest when you open your email. It might be a subtle feeling of "wrongness" in a certain environment, or a sudden dip in energy after a specific conversation. These aren't just "feelings." They are energetic data points being processed by your foundational system.

When we ignore these whispers, the body has to get louder. The whisper becomes a headache. The headache becomes chronic fatigue. The fatigue becomes illness.

By becoming energy literate, you learn to interpret these signals early. You begin to understand what inputs create coherence for you and what inputs create fragmentation. This is the shift from being a passive observer of your health to becoming an energy steward.

Science Meets Spirit: The Mechanics of Healing

It is easy to think of energy healing as something mystical or "out there." But the reality is quite grounded. Every session I facilitate is designed to support the body’s natural repair mechanisms by addressing this primary communicator system.

I use tools like sound, touch, and aromatherapy not just for the sensory experience, but because they carry specific frequencies that can interact with your body’s biofield. For example, sound vibration can help release physical and energetic stagnation, much like a tuning fork can help a piano return to its proper pitch.

In a typical session at the studio, we focus on clearing the "noise" from your system. We look at where energy is stuck and where the communication has broken down. By restoring energetic coherence, we allow the body’s natural intelligence to take over. This is the bridge between the biology I studied as an RN and the vibrational medicine I practice today. You can explore more about how this works in Beyond Stress: A Deeper Understanding of How the Body Heals.

Why This System Was Left Out

Why weren't we taught this in school? Largely because this essential system is invisible to the naked eye and difficult to measure with traditional tools. Our current medical model is built on what we can see, cut, or chemically alter.

However, just because we can't see the air doesn't mean we don't breathe it. Just because we can't see the WiFi signal doesn't mean our phones aren't connected. The primary communicator system is the "wireless" network of the human body.

Fortunately, the tide is turning. More people are realizing that a truly holistic approach to health must include the energetic layer. We are moving away from the idea that we are just "meat suits" and toward the understanding that we are complex, energetic beings.

From Relief to Stewardship

For many of my clients, their journey begins because they are looking for relief. They are "Restorers": people who have hit a wall and need to find their way back to center. They feel lighter and clearer after a session, but the real magic happens when they start to apply energy literacy to their daily lives.

This is the transition into being an "Energy Steward."

An Energy Steward doesn't just wait for things to go wrong. They proactively maintain their balance. They know how to ground themselves after a stressful day. They recognize when their system is becoming overloaded and they have the tools to sustain their vitality.

Energy literacy gives you back your power. It removes the mystery of why you feel the way you do and replaces it with a practical framework for self-regulation. You start to see your health not as something that "happens" to you, but as something you actively participate in.

Taking the First Step

If you are new to this concept, the first step is simply to pay attention. Start noticing the "current" in your body. How do you feel in different rooms? How does your body react to certain people or tasks?

You don't need a degree in biophysics to start being energy literate. You just need a willingness to listen.

If you feel like your primary communicator system needs a reset, I invite you to explore my sessions. Whether we are working through sound, touch, or education, the goal is always the same: to return your body to a state of coherence and activate your natural power to heal.

The map of the body you were taught in school was only the beginning. There is an entire foundational system waiting to be understood. When you learn to speak its language, you unlock a new level of vitality, clarity, and peace.
